minor-latin">TIP: Use energy-efficient lighting fixtures like LED bulbs to save up on the electric bill.

Light-emitting diode bulbs (better known as LED bulbs) are long-lasting, durable, safe, and are definitely cost-effective. They were originally designed for commercial reasons to avoid constant maintenance that will burn the pockets of companies. This is why we see billboards using LED lights, and we hardly see someone rushing up and replacing a burned-out bulb.

They also have environmental benefits, and using them in your home will be one of the best decisions you'll ever make. If you worry about your monthly electric bill, it's time to buy LED bulbs. You might think they're more expensive than ordinary incandescent light bulbs, but in the long run, you actually get to save more, and your wallet won't have to suffer any longer. LED bulbs remain cool for long periods of time—as much as 10 years for just one LED bulb!–and maintenance and repair aren't issues. They also require a generally lower amount of power as compared to incandescent light bulbs. They don't break easily, too, and these energy-efficient bulbs don't have mercury in them, so you're assured that your home is safely lit up, and they won't be environmental hazards when they do burn out.

Another good reason to start using LED bulbs is that they don't contribute to the heat in our very tropical country: unlike incandescent bulbs which heat up fast, LED bulbs prevent heat build-up and can even reduce regular use of your air conditioning units. Think about your summer nights – you don't want to feel the sweltering heat that much now, do you?

When you consider buying LED bulbs and exchange your incandescent light bulbs (which you must dispose of properly), not only are you paying less for electricity charges, but you're also advocating a greener, healthier environment.

<span style="font-family:

Guided by the “green” principle, Nuvali Evoliving, a project of Ayala Land, and Manila Bulletin Publishing Corporation have partnered launching a livelihood program for at least 50 women in Pag-asa Vesta Plains in Sitio Majada-in, Canlubang, Calamba.

The women were trained to weave baskets, bags, trays, jars, among other products, using recycled paper materials such as old newspapers.

For its part, Manila Bulletin donated 500 kilos of old newspapers to be recycled and made into high-quality paper products.

Edgar Duldulao, project development officer of Nuvali, said the program is part of an umbrella project, “Alay sa Komunidad,” that provides livelihood for neighboring communities of Nuvali which is located at Sta. Rosa, Calamba and Cabuyao in Laguna.

Duldulao said providing livelihood using recyclable materials highlights the company’s thrust of environmental, economic and social sustainability. “We are adopting a holistic approach for the improvement of identified communities and the environment as well,” he said.

Women beneficiaries testified that the weaving program, which started in 2008, has greatly improved their lives.

Yolly Vibar, a 46-year-old former vegetable vendor with six children, said the income she earns from weaving has supported the schooling of her children. “Nasusuportahan nito ang baon ng mga anak ko araw-araw at mga pangangailangan ng aming pamilya,” she said.

Dana Carandang, 44, who has four kids, appreciated the program’s environment-friendly goals. “Dahil dito, nababawasan na sa lugar namin yung paggamit ng plastic na nakakasira ng kalikasan,” she said.

Carandang, who is also a barangay health worker, creates the sample paper products to be reproduced. She estimated that each member finishes an average of four to five products a day. Prices range from P50 to P700. Last December, their hand-woven ham baskets brought in at least P10,000, she said.

She thanked the Manila Bulletin, which saved them from buying old newspapers that cost P10 per kilo.

Carandang said the program formed stronger ties in her family. “Tumutulong din ang asawa at mga anak ko sa paggawa. Kaya lalo kaming nagkakaisa para sa makaahon sa buhay,” she said.

Duldulao said coming programs would also provide income for husbands and children.

“Fathers could learn how to make concrete hollow blocks mixed with plastic which are more efficient and environmentally-friendly, while children can be taught soap-making that will earn them their baon,” he said.

Nuvali is Ayala Land’s first and largest mixed-use eco-development in the Philippines, which molds work, leisure and family into the contours of a single community that fuses the ecological, economic and social spheres of life.
