This May, a new development has risen in NUVALI: the greenest Shell Station to date. Customers can gas up at Shell NUVALI to personally see the innovations. The retail station showcases many environmentally friendly features including Solar-powered LED Perimeter lightings (which make it brownout-free) as well as Air-cleaning wall paint using Boysen KNOxOUT^TM, the revolutionary air cleaning paint which makes painted walls become active air-purifying surfaces that help protect people from harmful gases.

On top of that, the station also has LED lighting designed with infrared motion sensor, so it could adjust from dim to full power when customer is detected, and return to dim when customer has finished refueling.

Miriam College brings its unique brand of education to NUVALI in 2014

 Calamba, Laguna—Miriam College marks a new chapter in its rich and colorful 85-year history with the soft launch of its second campus in NUVALI which is slated to open in 2014.

On a 15-hectare property in the flourishing community of NUVALI, Miriam College will build a co-educational campus to cater to a larger and more diverse sector of society.

“Miriam College will embark on a new and broader expression of its vision and mission. We want to provide our unique brand of holistic education to the emerging markets in the south,” says Miriam College President Dr. Rosario O. Lapus.

The establishment of Miriam College-NUVALI is a result of a rigorous process of research, consultation and careful deliberation that started as early as 2006, involving the whole Miriam College community. Comprehensive studies, focus group discussions and consultations with various sectors and the potential market helped determine demand for a Miriam College education as well as the feasibility and sustainability of putting up a second campus in Laguna.

Of the many locations considered, Ayala Land’s NUVALI project was chosen because of its proximity to the Quezon City campus, the rapid economic growth in the area and, more importantly, the consistent values and philosophy it shares with Miriam College on many aspects: sustainability, community development and environmental advocacy.

With its shared values and philosophy, NUVALI and Miriam College see an empowering partnership that can better impact communities in the area. “We can be partners in imparting the philosophy of balance, nurturing young minds and teaching the importance of community and environment through Miriam College’s excellent academic programs infused with Christian values. Each complements the other by believing that the ‘integrity of creation’, which is one of Miriam College’s core values, is the key to this partnership,” says Aniceto V. Bisnar, Jr., General Manager of NUVALI

For its second campus, Miriam College will not only bring the same academic standards enjoyed by its Quezon City campus but introduce new and innovative programs combining real and virtual learning tools. “We intend to look into a new pedagogy, to develop exciting programs that will prepare young girls and boys for the 21^st century world we live in—global, digital, fast-paced, complex and change-oriented,” adds Dr. Lapus.

It will also bring its strong social development experience to impact upon more communities with the common thrust toward national development. To benefit the community are Miriam College’s social programs that include the Miriam Adult Education or MAE, its night school for out-of-school youth and its advocacy in the areas of peace, women, environment, teacher-training and community involvement. “With the help of MAE, members of the community will be able to learn basic life-skills, technical knowledge and values to help them improve their lives and eventually, their social status. Similarly, NUVALI has its own livelihood and training programs, providing opportunities to hundreds of people from the communities. Sustainable products such as special paving blocks, hollow blocks, baskets and bags using recycled paper are being used and promoted by NUVALI,” says John Estacio, NUVALI Operations Manager 

Miriam College-NUVALI is covered by a 10-year development plan starting with the Basic Education –pre-school, grade school (Grades 1-2) and high school (1^st-2^ndYear). The Higher Education unit is scheduled to begin on the 5^th year (2019). Construction will be in phases with special emphasis on an environmentally-sustainable school that is at the same time safe, student-friendly and conducive to living and learning. A 50-50 percentage will be devoted to structures and open spaces; building designs will adapt to the existing terrain, climate, and environment; and sustainable energy sources will be utilized. 

As it explores new horizons on its 85^th year, Miriam College draws inspiration from the pioneering spirit of its Maryknoll founders, who, armed with courage and deep faith, established the school in 1926. “We remain rooted in the legacy our founders have left as we break new grounds and face new challenges in our mission to form leaders in service for the 21^st century,” concludes Dr. Lapus. 

Starting from the early morning of April 21, NUVALI was already abuzz—the Solenad 1 Activity Area was filled with vendors of organic produce, earth-friendly handicrafts, and other products from the local communities.

Visitors of NUVALI flocked this Green Market from morning to evening for earth-friendly finds.  This was just one of the attractions of the activity-filled earth fest of NUVALI last April 21 and 22—called “Green Freedom,” it conveyed both the freedom of space and freedom from the stresses of urban life, which one can experience at NUVALI.

It was a toast to the earth unlike any other—in the two days, informative talks and family-friendly activities showed participants how saving the earth can be practical and enjoyable.

For certified urbanites, the Urban Farming and Gardening 101 talk showed how they can grow their own plants, herbs, and other vegetation in their own backyard. Cooking demos on organic and green cooking were also given, opening possibilities for a healthier lifestyle even to the busiest individual.

Bird Watching lessons were given by the Wild Bird Club of the Philippines (WBCP)—perfect for when they would like to test their skills in spotting more than 60 bird species that can be found at the NUVALI Wildlife and Bird Sanctuary. There were also Bird Walks, a climate clinic, and a boat-making workshop using recycled Tetra Pak containers. Children and adults alike also made their personalized oaths in saving the earth through the Freedom Wall. And what better way for guests to travel and explore NUVALI’s attractions? None other than electric-powered jeeps!

Visitors also dropped by to deposit their old junk such as paper, plastic, metal, and e-wastes at the Recyclables Fair held at the NUVALI Transport Terminal.

Guests gathered at the Evoliving Center dockside during the eve of Earth Day, as thousands of guests enjoyed a night filled with music and entertainment, hosted by Angel Jacob and featured performances by the country’s top performers namely, Mel Villena and band, Brigada, Kiss Jane, Juris, Zia Quizon, Jed Madela, Kyla, and Christian Bautista. Renditions of “earth anthems” like Change the World and Earth Song conveyed such strong messages of the earth’s call. 

The following day started early, with the participants of the Silakbo Fun Run and Bike ready to do their part for the benefit of the Save Silang-Sta. Rosa Foundation. The race was spearheaded by the Municipality of Sta. Rosa, which aims to raise funds for the rehabilitation and preservation of the Sta. Rosa watershed. 

NUVALI tie-ups with the Calamba local government are also in the works for several environmental-related programs like river clean-ups, info-awareness campaign and tree-planting activities. 

These activities echo NUVALI’s ultimate aim to make an impact, not just to the environment, but most especially to the people thriving in it.
